Definition 1.
A Whipsaw is a two-man long-bladed hand saw used to cut thick logs into planks.
Definition 2.
Whipsaw is a two man Guitar/Banjo – Drum duo from the weeping woods of Portland Oregon. This is a new band but these boys are not new to this. Henry Hill spent 25y years as the songwriter, guitarist and vocalist of heralded Portland band Hillstomp. Drummer Noah Phillips is a founding member of (equally heralded) Portland folk punk band The Taxpayers.
These two fellas came together in early 2026 and the walls immediately began to sweat. The Sun turned a deep pink and the Sturgeon deep in the Willamette looked at each other as if to say, “Finally”
This is Blues, this is Folk punk, this is dance music, this is Appalachian devil tunes. It’s all of those and none of them. This is Whipsaw.

THE NEON PRAIRIE DOGS

“LIKE WAYLON ON ACID”

The Neon Prairie Dogs from Portland, Oregon are a hard-hitting Country power trio taking inspiration from a long line of West Coast punks ranging from Buck Owens to The Oh Sees. At any given show they are as likely to play you a Waylon Jennings or Garth Brooks song as they are to cover ABBA or Cher, leaving a trail of beer cans, rhinestones and broken hearts at the end of every show.

Lead singer and guitar whiz Samuel Cody Matson inhabits country music’s long tradition of rhinestone cowboys— flashy costumes, white-hot solos, and a beefy baritone, but with a darkly comic songwriting style that betrays a deep vulnerability and uncertainty behind the glitz and glamor. Rounding out the band are Zach Retzl on bass and Jonathan Ventrella on drums.

In a thriving Portland country scene, The Neon Prairie Dogs stand out for their idiosyncrasy, virtuosity, and ability to rock a room down to its foundations.
