Josh Cole has been playing bluegrass in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years. It started in the late 90s, when he first heard “Midnight Moonlight” from Old and In the Way. That moment forever bonded Josh to bluegrass music.
He went on to serve as President of the Oregon Bluegrass Association and continues to host “Music From the True Vine” on KBOO-FM, the longest running bluegrass show West of the Mississippi.
Josh’s influences include Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, and Bill Monroe, many of whom are featured on the Josh Cole Bluegrass Show, his podcast with nearly 200 episodes of traditional bluegrass recordings.
Josh has played in dozens of bands, along with running his own hard-driving bluegrass band for nearly two decades. That’s why hometown fans have lovingly nicknamed him “The Elvis of Portland Bluegrass.”

Shorty & the Mustangs was formed in Spring of 1996. Big Tex called some of his musician friends to see if they wanted to try something new. Having grown up in Texas (something must have gotten in his blood when he was a youngster), western swing music was calling him home. So they dug out some old Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb records and gave it a shot. Well, 29 years later they’re having so much fun they’re still at it. Other folks are liking it, too. They play the bars and honky tonks regularly around Portland, Oregon, and sometimes play at the local farmers markets and festivals.
Shorty & the Mustangs play a mix of western swing, honky tonk and roots country music. Lara Carlisle’s heart felt singing can get folks out on the dance floor with a Patsy Cline torch song or a Gram Parsons rocker. Ken Woodside and Phil Hornik, on drums and bass, lay down a strong dance beat while Mike Moore on guitar, and Mitch “Big Tex” Gilbert on steel guitar put in the twang and tears. Marilee Hord sings beautiful duets with Lara and plays the heck out of the fiddle.

There has been a cult-like fascination growing around Kassi Valazza since the self-release of her 2019 debut album Dear Dead Days, which she followed with a surprise digital EP called Highway Sounds last year. She is seated squarely at the vanguard of new American songwriters strengthening and broadening the sound of country music as she tours with celebrated acts such as Melissa Carper and Riddy Arman. The Southwestern native resides in Portland, Oregon, a hotbed of songwriters producing albums that both bear the torch and bend the arc of American roots music, and she recently signed with Fluff & Gravy Records, a label known for launching Anna Tivel and Margo Cilker.

Americana? Pop? Spaghetti Western? Angular rock? Why choose? Johnny Keener doesn’t! He has spent decades distilling his wide and varied influences and running them through his overheated brain. The result is a potent sound full of stories, hooks, and twang, as well as just whatever the hell is going on with him (who can say?!) He entertains and surprises. He grooves with sincerity and humor, and is as passionate as ever about writing good songs and sharing them.
“Taxi is a band led by two songwriters and friends who have been collaborating for half of a decade; Noah Powell and Isaac Hewitt. Over the years they’ve written many songs that value the fun, melodic, simpler side of vintage rock and roll. Taxi plays the best songs that these two artists have written, and the band to back them is a troop of great musical minds. Taxi’s aim is to push beyond themselves and bring music to the people that brings as much joy to those hearing it as it does to those playing it.”

Expanding on their love of American R&B, The Resolectrics are a rock & soul power trio exploring the vast landscapes of roots music with layered harmonies, multi-tonal guitar tracks, and ambitious arrangements. Since releasing their “Booker T. meets The Band” debut record, High Water, guitarist Tate Peterson, drummer John Becher, and bassist Bob Dunham have honed a leaner, meaner approach through continuous gigging and constant refinement. The band’s latest record, Open Seas, adds some timeless, British Invasion-style psychedelia to the mix along with a touch of horns and harmonica that help reconnect the music to its soul-based heritage.

The old rowdy ramshackle boys from Denver have put together a reunion gig with Mike Elias, Birger Olsen, Tom Bevitori, Lewi Longmire, David Lipkind, Taylor Kingman, Sean MacNeil AND Ben Nugent! Look for sloppy good times!
However, much of Barna’s story is not unique to his hometown, and, like most of small town America, Eureka has lost some of that charm over time. Main Street has changed, kids don’t run around quite so carelessly, and in an almost laughably cruel twist, his childhood home was knocked down in favor of a Walmart parking lot.
After high school, Howard moved north to study animation in one cold and windy city and then east for love in another. Years later, he blindly followed two friends to the Northwest, crossing the Rockies for the first time, in search of inspiration, opportunity and a fresh start.
Barna’s self-titled debut chronicled these moves as he struggled with the contrast between his small town upbringing and these big city wanderings. The album was met with critical acclaim and underground success, partly thanks to an opportunely placed song in the hit indie film, Drinking Buddies. One critic even likened him to some “lost genius of the 60’s.”
The songs on Barna Howard’s second album, Quite A Feelin’, ruminate on his relationship with home. Now entrenched in Portland, Oregon, many of the album’s tracks immortalize and reflect on the Eureka he once knew, while others focus on the relationships that define his new home out west. Small town life has long been celebrated in country and folk music, but Barna’s knack for capturing his own deeply personal nostalgia resonates in a rarely universal way.

Matt Mitchell Music Company is an original Americana project hailing from the Pacific Northwest. Centered around the old-soul, observational storytelling of Mitchell, who lives full time out of an imported Japanese bus, MMMC brings Mitchell’s tunes to life in solo, acoustic duo/trio and full on, electrified band configurations. Mitchell’s songs are equal parts clever, quick-witted and heartbreakingly confessional, (oftentimes all at once) translating well both in attentive listening rooms and rowdy rock halls. If ‘The Band’ took a road trip to Laurel Canyon and pulled their tour bus over to pick up John Prine hitching his way down the pacific coastline, their rolling jam sessions might sound a little like Matt Mitchell Music Co.

Mikey Whalen is an indie songwriter who draws inspiration from the songwriting heavy hitters of decades past. His songs tell stories of lovable misfits and existential woes, sometimes melancholic, sometimes humorous, and often both. He writes and records his songs in his Portland home, which he has affectionately dubbed ‘Pinball Castle’.
https://www.thisissunbathe.com
Sunbathe is a guitar-pop band from Portland, Oregon, formed in 2015 by songwriter Maggie Morris. Known for her ethereal vocals and introspective songwriting, Morris radiates the smarts and edge of Liz Phair at her anthemic best, but with delicate golden guitar and a glut of catchy harmonies that would make James Mercer shed a little tear. The live band has an exceptional lineup including Adria Ivanitsky, Tyler Figley, and Skyler Hamler. Together, the band has an energetic and joyful presence on stage and a signature sound characterized by shimmering guitars, sweeping melodies, and a deep sense of emotional resonance.
Sunbathe’s musical journey has been marked by exciting milestones, including a notable 2019 recognition as one of Portland’s “Best New Bands.” Their growing reputation led them to tour with some of the indie scene’s most respected acts, including Typhoon, Built to Spill, and Helio Sequence, garnering an exceptional response from their audiences. With their anticipated 2025 release, “Myself To You”, the band is set to continue impressing audiences far and wide.

With what PopMatters describes as “tenacious swagger,” critically-acclaimed solo artist Ashleigh Flynn recently dialed up the volume and debuted an all-female rock band as a nod to the “Rosie the Riveter” archetype from WWII.
Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass music and Motown. A prolific songwriter and performer blessed with unbridled charisma, she arrived on the Americana scene in 2008 with the release of her third LP, American Dream, a poetic lament to the elusiveness of that national ethos. A Million Stars followed in 2013 – a rollicking journey celebrating the women pioneers of the American West.
Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters’ inaugural LP hit the streets in 2018 featuring a sound that hearkens back to early Stones, ‘70s psychedelic country rock, and alternately charms like a Sunday afternoon front porch session…

Indie musician and singer-songwriter Caitlin Jemma speaks for the multitudes on her celestial disco-folk album, True Meaning, out recently on American Standard Time Records. Conjuring the soulfulness of Norah Jones, the melancholy of Joni Mitchell, and the lyric-bending bewitchment of Bonnie Raitt, Jemma takes listeners on an atmospheric journey from heartbreak to hope throughout the ten dynamic tracks which make up True Meaning—a vulnerable-yet-spirited release exploring the full emotional spectrum of being human, while posing an age-old philosophical question: “What is the true meaning of life?”
Inspired by long, solitary drives on desert highways and then recorded in Portland, OR, with an all-star band, True Meaning is an album of depth, nuance, catharsis, playfulness, and resilience—all things the world needs now.

Reb & the Good News is a Portland based funk-pop, world, and soul group that brings optimism to the dance floor. Catchy horn lines and sultry vocals soar over grooves that you can’t help but move to. The band is led by vocalist and guitarist Reb Conner, whose songs reach for hope in a world under pressure. Her songwriting influences span many genres including afrobeat, jazz, cumbia, reggae, r&b and country, and she uses genre as a tool to portray emotion. Reb believes that through feeling deeply and dancing together, we can face all that we’re up against in this life. She is supported by her creative partner, sax and keys player Leon Cotter, (a touring member of the California Honeydrops), as well as some of Portland’s heaviest hitters: Cyrus Nabipoor on trumpet, Ross Garlow on bass, Kirk Kalbfleisch on drums and percussionist Carmelo Torres on percussion.

The Pagan Jug Band is an all-acoustic, boot-stompin’ band featuring a mean banjo and a rockin’ guitar – throw in more strings, some brass, and a washboard and you’ve got a band that really knows how to get folks out of their seats and onto the dance floor! On any given Tuesday in Portland you’ll see them playing their weekly “Pagan Tuesday” show – where the band sometimes swells up to 10 members as long-time fans and random passers-by join them on stage to keep the music communal. The Pagans have a large body of original songs that they mix seamlessly with carefully curated covers and traditionals.

Portland, Oregon based singer-songwriter Leigh Jones makes a dazzling turn with her latest folk creation: Eugenia Riot. The name is taken from her eldest known female ancestor, Eugenia Riot, who was born in the year 1205 in Yorkshire, England. An internationally touring musician with a background in theater, Jones delights audiences with her irresistible stage presence and enrapturing voice. She has spoken at the US Embassy in Ethiopia on Women in Music, was selected with her former band Crow and the Canyon for the American Music Abroad program, and has toured the US from coast to coast since 2010.
Jones grew up in North Carolina and went on to earn a drama degree from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Her time immersed in the diversity of NYC’s music scene sparked a passion for songwriting, and she was eventually lured to the magic of the Pacific Northwest, where she has continued to maximize her versatility as a musician. With her former bands, bluegrass outfit Crow and the Canyon, and harmony-driven folk trio Five Letter Word, Jones moved easily from strings to percussion, occasionally throwing on tap shoes to round out a performance.
Her pandemic-born solo project, Eugenia Riot, explores the crescendos of love, heartache, and the human condition by weaving together words and melodies in a style that is at once idiosyncratic and infectious. Jones’ self-examining songwriting, fortified by indie-rock accompaniment, makes her debut album “Can’t Wait to Miss You” (released May 12, 2023) both gentle and fierce, playful and romantic – an engaging blend of folk, rock, and pop.
Eugenia Riot won third place (out of 400+ initial applicants) in the 2024 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Troubadour Contest, and has shared stages with The Brothers Comatose, The California Honeydrops, The Lowest Pair, Handmade Moments, Shook Twins, John Craigie, John Gallagher Jr., Jacob Jolliff, and Chatham County Line, among many others.
