Expanding on their love of American R&B, The Resolectrics are a rock & soul power trio exploring the vast landscapes of roots music with layered harmonies, multi-tonal guitar tracks, and ambitious arrangements. Since releasing their “Booker T. meets The Band” debut record, High Water, guitarist Tate Peterson, drummer John Becher, and bassist Bob Dunham have honed a leaner, meaner approach through continuous gigging and constant refinement. The band’s latest record, Open Seas, adds some timeless, British Invasion-style psychedelia to the mix along with a touch of horns and harmonica that help reconnect the music to its soul-based heritage.

Garett Brennan is an Oregon-based songwriter, singer and instrumentalist. His solo work explores the far intimate corners of the acoustic, roots and Americana worlds. His side project work with pigWar explores the fringe boundaries of soul, psychedelic and rock. His live performances are undeniably authentic and raw.
Tonight the ‘Licks are Garett with Luke Price, Jon Neufeld, Will Amend and Dave Coniglio!
From a young age, Kevin Lee Florence was always singing – first in church, and then inadvertently around the house. It wasn’t until his early twenties, however, that Florence picked up the guitar and immersed himself in Neil Young, Damien Jurado, Paul Simon, and a host of other folk legends, despite being raised in an community that disparaged folk music. He found inspiration in his father’s vinyl collection and an inborn penchant for writing poetry, and gradually set about turning his passion into something viable.
Given, Kevin Lee Florence’s debut album, represents the cream of the crop from his personally penned songs, along with two of Florence’s favorite covers: Paul Simon’s “Peace Like a River” and Damien Jurado’s “Ohio.” These gentle nods to two of his biggest influences help flesh out the simple, nine track record. Flecked with folk influences, finger-picked guitar lines and distinctive harmonies provided by his sister Kelly Florence, Given falls somewhere between Sam Beam’s hushed, vivid folk and Simon’s own conversational, quirky lyrical genius. The slow-burning hope of “Could Today be the Day” falls into a groove, and contrasts with harmony fanfare and drama on album closer “Kindness.” For the more traditional minded, “Shining Shining” is pure pastoral bliss, with bright piano accents and lush harmonies. Through it all, Florence’s understated, warm voice carries the record, wrapping you like a warm blanket on an autumn evening.

Taco Tapes is a collaboration steered by Ben Walden and Jeremy James Meyer. Both raised in the Pacific Northwest and in the folk music tradition, they cite their parents, more than anything, in initiating them down this path.
http://www.jeremyjamesmeyer.org
“Last year was a devastating time for fans of Americana, country, and pretty much anyone who loved a well-written song with the passing of Walker, Prine and Billy Joe Shaver all in the span of six months. It’s heartening though to know there is another generation of talented singers and songwriters eschewing current trends and fads and focusing simply on writing timeless, relatable music agnostic of specific genres. Meyer is certainly one of those acolytes to the greats, alongside peers like Todd Snider and Hayes Carll carrying that tradition into the future.” –Glide Magazine

Vermont native and traveler at heart, Jess Clemons now calls Oregon home. Having attended music school in Nova Scotia, toured extensively across Canada, and currently living part time in Baja, Mexico, she draws songs from her wide variety of human connections. With a commanding voice reminiscent of early Patty Griffin & Bonnie Raitt combined with her songwriting prowess, Jess is one to reckon with.

Kris Deelane is making a loud noise in the Portland Rock scene. With her nine piece soul band The Hurt, Kris is amping up her performances in and around Portland and the Pacific Northwest. A true road warrior with years of solid touring experience, Kris is keeping it local and in the moment with shows all over town. From The Alberta Rose Theatre to The Doug Fir, McMenamin’s Edgefield to Al’s Den at the Crystal and a standing residency at Laurelthirst Public House, she and the band are everywhere. Summer 2015, Kris Deelane and The Hurt performed at Oregon Country Fair, What The Festival, and Dixie Festival, and also opened for 3 Dog Night, and Martha Davis and the Motels.
The Hurt is ten players strong and features a number of Portland music luminaries including Ned Failing (Mexican Gun Fight/Floydian Slips) on drums, Steve Kerin on keys (Too Loose Cajun Band, Atomic Gumbo, Rose City Kings and winner of the Cascade Blues Association’s “Keyboardist of the Year”), Greg Hyatt on bass (Five Easy Pieces, Zoo People, Berthaline, and Lapdog, featuring members of Toad The Wet Sprocket), Heidi Shuler (Merl Saunders) on percussion and Alan Toribio (Mexican Gunfight) on guitar. With her backing singers, The Lady Parts, and horn section, Kris is dipping into deep cuts and old school favorites from the soul sounds of the 60’s and 70’s. Think Motown to Memphis, Stax to Atlantic records, Aretha to Etta. It’s all here!

Shorty & the Mustangs was formed in Spring of 1996. Big Tex called some of his musician friends to see if they wanted to try something new. Having grown up in Texas (something must have gotten in his blood when he was a youngster), western swing music was calling him home. So they dug out some old Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb records and gave it a shot. Well, 23 years later theyre having so much fun theyre still at it. Other folks are liking it, too. They play the bars and honky tonks regularly around Portland, Oregon, and sometimes play at the local farmers markets and festivals.
Shorty & the Mustangs play a mix of western swing, honky tonk and roots country music. Lara Carlisle’s heart felt singing can get folks out on the dance floor with a Patsy Cline torch song or a Gram Parsons rocker. Ken Woodside and Phil Hornik, on drums and bass, lay down a strong dance beat while Mike Moore on guitar, and Mitch Big Tex Gilbert on steel guitar put in the twang and tears. Marilee Hord sings beautiful duets with Lara and plays the heck out of the fiddle.

Florida-born and Oregon-raised, Robert’s northwest upbringing simultaneously juxtaposed and complimented his southern roots. Reinforced by his musically inclined family of six, four of which, including Robert, also consider themselves singers, it was a smooth transition when Robert made the ultimate decision to pursue music full-time. As a student of history in all facets, it isn’t surprising that Robert draws musical influence across a spectrum of genres, yet most significantly from his Honky Tonk forbearers like Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Waylon Jennings, to name a few.

Marcedes Carroll is a southwestern Montana musician. With a guitar in tow, she bends Americana melodies to her stylistic storytelling.

From a young age singing lullabies to her brothers cradled in the Rocky Mountains, to her adult years telling stories in dimly lit bars, Marcedes Carroll has found her voice best behind a guitar. Coming from a long line of weathered Nordics, who have eventually found their way to the rugged landscape of Southwest Montana, she has a bloodline of stories to tell.
“She’s a powerhouse singer who can boom like Etta and croon like Ella, and she writes visual lyrics that draw upon her the mountains and streams that define the Last Best Place as much as they do her own well-rounded sensibilities.” —Skip Anderson, The Bozone.com

On any given Tuesday in Portland you’ll see them playing their weekly “Pagan Tuesday” show – where the band sometimes swells up to 10 members as long-time fans and random passers-by join them on stage to keep the music communal. “The first 20 years is just to see if you like it or not,” Jerry Lopez, an iconic surfer, joked about the sport and lifestyle of surfing. Joe Kaplow has always admired and glorified that type of Jedi-like dedication. After 20 years, Kaplow is pretty sure he likes making music.
Up until now it was easy for California based songwriter Joe Kaplow to be pushed along. At eight he was getting screamed at by Uncle Jim for playing out of time. A few years later found him passing almost every single after school evening getting stoned and jamming with his band in Bondar’s basement. Years later again he was studying music at college and having to sink or swim in the sea of talent crowding Boston streets and finally, for the past 5 years, plugging his amp into the outlet of American music heritage, driving around and playing shows in bars, clubs, and coffee shops while figuring out along the way that CDs are lame and that booking pitches should be concise. It was almost like there wasn’t time to stop and think.

“The Pine Hearts are totally rad! They’re one of the best new bands on the scene. The singing, picking and songwriting is fabtastic and organic. Two thumbs up!” — Charles Humphrey III (Songs From The Road Band). Just beneath the eaves of Washington’s Cascade Mountains, The Pine Hearts are combining wood, ore and soul to channel the colossal, organic spirit of the untamed Pacific Northwest. Their sound, like the environment around them, is ever-changing, harnessing classic country songwriting, the powerful emotive themes of experimental folk, and the blazing-fast pickin’ rhythms of traditional Appalachian bluegrass — all the while staying rooted to their rock-n-roll backgrounds.

IT’S THE HARDSCRABBLE TWANG OF HILLBILLY SONGS MIXED WITH THE UNDENIABLE BEAT OF THE BLUES THAT CREATED THE RECKLESS EXUBERANCE OF ROCK N ROLL. LIVE IT UP AT THE HONKY TONK ON A SATURDAY NIGHT AND SING A LITTLE GOSPEL PRAYER FOR REDEMPTION ON SUNDAY MORNING. IT’S NOT ABOUT COMMERCIALISM OR THE NEXT TREND. Growing up as a bathroom-singing nerd playing saxophone in the school band, Anna admits that if she could wield any superpower it might be invisibility. Not necessarily the first thing you think of for an openly political, big-voiced folk festival favorite who has made a name for herself sitting in with some of the biggest names in the Americana scene. A recent collaboration with Rainbow Girls bore especially potent fruit — and if you read my Music That Moved Me in 2022list, you’ll see at the very top was Anna’s thorny “Big Dick Energy.”
Rarely does a song make you laugh and then dance and then follow with a sucker punch about how unsafe many women feel just taking up space in the world. The video also illustrates the song’s deft twist: Women can gang together to mock and minimize the men who for so long have taken away their agency and power. And yet, the song also makes you want to forget it all and just groove to the sexiest flute solo in recent memory. If this is a foreshadowing of what’s to come with Anna’s solo work, call me quite intrigued.

Onetime PDX roots-rock Americana songwriter returns to town for a quick visit!
A REVELATION! He is the steady pendulum of a land oil rig; swingin betwixt misery and pride. Over the last 13 seasons with seven self-released records, a slew of singles slated for this year, as well as another album already in the works, he is tapped inspiration. He explores the complexities inherent in the immorality of capitalism and the individual purpose found in one’s work. With uncanny awareness aims his bead at the exact pointwhere two disparate paradigms collide. He speaks of the greater implications of our reliance on fossil fuels, corrupt political systems, allopathic medicine, fear driven media, consumerism, etc. Even as he tackles such heaviness his songs are boisterous, driving, and hopeful. The perfect rallying cry for humanity from the heart of a working man.

The result is a new west coast, country rocking gem.

The Pagan Jug Band is an all-acoustic, boot-stompin’ band featuring a mean banjo and a rockin’ guitar – throw in more strings, some brass, and a washboard and you’ve got a band that really knows how to get folks out of their seats and onto the dance floor! On any given Tuesday in Portland you’ll see them playing their weekly “Pagan Tuesday” show – where the band sometimes swells up to 10 members as long-time fans and random passers-by join them on stage to keep the music communal. The Pagans have a large body of original songs that they mix seamlessly with carefully curated covers and traditionals.

Quattlebaum, Southern Gent and Banjo Slinger, brings more to the table than just music. With his infectious smile and weird antics, he brings people together; encouraging camaraderie and building community. The singer-songwriter, currently based in Bend, Oregon, tours the country picking and strumming indie-folk songs that are spacious and emotive, and have an implicit groove. When he plays, you can hear the reverberations of the rustic mountains clashing with the breezy ocean. Like a willowy heron, Quattlebaum struts around on stage as the music moves through him, evoking a range of emotions from laughter to longing. He shares tender moments, where one can almost hear his banjo breathing, then erupts into raucous peaks of unbridled energy—his captivating solo performances take his audiences on a ride.
Born in Italy to a Sicilian-American father and a Guatemalan mother, Cristina Vane has always had a tenuous relationship with identity and place. She grew up between England, France and Italy, and was fluent in four languages by the time she moved to her fathers’ native United States for university at 18. Despite this, (and perhaps because of it) she had no sense of belonging to any one culture or country. What she did have, however, was an intense love of music. Powered by her signature take on blues and rock, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cristina Vane’s debut album, Nowhere Sounds Lovely, earned her praise from the likes of American Songwriter and Rolling Stone Country, which deemed it ‘mesmerizing stuff’. The 2021 release was written largely on a road trip across America. Since then, Vane has laid down roots in Nashville and had the opportunity to spend more time exploring internally. On her sophomore album “Make Myself Me Again”, Vane has found a way all the way around the country and right back to herself, both musically and personally. “I’ve been trying to peel back the layers, to understand who I am, and I think that process has translated to this record,” she explains, “The production is straightforward, more minimal, and a bit of a return to my rock roots but still paying homage to the music I’ve explored since then”.

With what PopMatters describes as “tenacious swagger,” critically-acclaimed solo artist Ashleigh Flynn recently dialed up the volume and debuted an all-female rock band as a nod to the “Rosie the Riveter” archetype from WWII.
Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass music and Motown. A prolific songwriter and performer blessed with unbridled charisma, she arrived on the Americana scene in 2008 with the release of her third LP, American Dream, a poetic lament to the elusiveness of that national ethos. A Million Stars followed in 2013 – a rollicking journey celebrating the women pioneers of the American West.
Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters’ inaugural LP hit the streets in 2018 featuring a sound that hearkens back to early Stones, ‘70s psychedelic country rock, and alternately charms like a Sunday afternoon front porch session…

Kendall Lujan
Kendall Lujan, a singer-songwriter from Portland Oregon ties together strong vocals with a folk/jazz flare. Her distinct voice ties in inspiration from old jazz and old country into her own interpretation of expression. Tending to write most when she is feeling blue but as she says “sometimes people just want to feel sad, it’s actually enjoyable sometimes because it makes the happiness so much sweeter”. Her debut EP is set to be released early 2023.
https://www.reddenhollow.com
“Reddenhollow songs have a way of wrapping around one’s life. Truly listening to them feels like stepping into a river. The separation between Taylor Moses’s melody, story and my own heart disappears and before I can articulate or understand it, the songs speak my own story – a witness to my secret grief and to my rising dreams. I would like to turn my body into smoke, mist, rain, light and let these songs take me somewhere sacred.
The unique timbre, grit and depth to Taylor’s voice sounds something ancient. In this collection of songs, Taylor takes us on one journey. The soft moments are so beautifully fragile that they allow me to walk through them while wounded, and suddenly throughout, Taylor’s voice takes us and the loving resolve and almost righteous anger become enough to pull us out of our suffering and onto ever present ground.” – Mimi Gilbert

EXTENDED HAPPY HOUR TONIGHT!
http://krisdeelaneandthehurt.com

Well, 23 years later they’re having so much fun they’re still at it.
Ken Woodside and Phil Hornik, on drums and bass, lay down a strong dance beat while Mike Moore on guitar, and Mitch “Big Tex” Gilbert on steel guitar put in the twang and tears. Marilee Hord sings beautiful duets with Lara and plays the heck out of the fiddle.

Portland area native Lee Walker is a drummer with a penchant for songcraft. In early 2022 Lee decided to put a band together to bring their songs to life and the Sleep Talkers were born. A group of well rounded and passionate musicians who also happen to be lifelong friends, Lee Walker and the Sleep Talkers have evolved beyond the projects singer songwriter origins to bring you a unique brand of honky tonk heartbreak steeped in self-actualization that is sure to make your boots scoot and your heart swell.

Known for the unique juxtaposition of her wry wit and ability to pen a heartbreaking ballad, Rose Gerber is the spark-wielding title character in Portland’s homegrown alt/country rock band, Rose Gerber & Sweet Relief. Like so many PNW bands, born in a garage during the rainy season in 2017, a labor that consisted of the blue-ribbon twang of their trio of guitars (pedal steel, acoustic, and electric), and Rose’s smooth Americana alto. Together, the five-piece band is a melting pot of essential American sounds, bringing a high lonesome rock vibe to the familiar sound of the pedal steel whine. Think Natalie Merchant-fronts-The Cardinals.
