Kris Deelane is making a loud noise in the Portland Rock scene. With her nine piece soul band The Hurt, Kris is amping up her performances in and around Portland and the Pacific Northwest. A true road warrior with years of solid touring experience, Kris is keeping it local and in the moment with shows all over town. From The Alberta Rose Theatre to The Doug Fir, McMenamin’s Edgefield to Al’s Den at the Crystal and a standing residency at Laurelthirst Public House, she and the band are everywhere. Summer 2015, Kris Deelane and The Hurt performed at Oregon Country Fair, What The Festival, and Dixie Festival, and also opened for 3 Dog Night, and Martha Davis and the Motels.
The Hurt is ten players strong and features a number of Portland music luminaries including Ned Failing (Mexican Gun Fight/Floydian Slips) on drums, Steve Kerin on keys (Too Loose Cajun Band, Atomic Gumbo, Rose City Kings and winner of the Cascade Blues Association’s “Keyboardist of the Year”), Greg Hyatt on bass (Five Easy Pieces, Zoo People, Berthaline, and Lapdog, featuring members of Toad The Wet Sprocket), Heidi Shuler (Merl Saunders) on percussion and Alan Toribio (Mexican Gunfight) on guitar. With her backing singers, The Lady Parts, and horn section, Kris is dipping into deep cuts and old school favorites from the soul sounds of the 60’s and 70’s. Think Motown to Memphis, Stax to Atlantic records, Aretha to Etta. It’s all here!

Canary Room is the project of Portland based songwriter Maddy Heide. Over the last few years she has uploaded a massive selection of songs on her bandcamp. There you will find a magnificent display of songs in their rawest form; each collection feels like a peak into the brain and surrounding world of someone who has to keep writing songs in order to survive. Pulling from a long tradition of folk music thru many generations (Vashti Bunyan, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Cockburn, Gillian Welch, the Weather Station, etc.), Maddy pens pockets of beautiful, heart-wrenching and yet comforting song with little more than her guitar and voice. With this collection of all new songs, I (emmet) helped record on 4-track cassette and in doing so tried to amplify Maddy’s performance along with our unique setting: positioned among trees, an overgrown garden, and a plethora of birds. I hope you dig it as much as I do. much love :^)

A passionate violinist and vocalist, Michelle Alany has delighted and wowed audiences worldwide.
Specializing in a global acoustic sound that features lush strings, soulful vocals and rhythmic groove, Michelle delivers soulful interpretations of traditional and original Sephardic (Judeo-Spanish), Balkan and Israeli songs infused with her tasty Austin-blues stylings.
She is at home delivering haunting Mediterranean melodies, trading shredder blues licks or gently crafting a sensuous country solo on the fly, bringing her joyous abandon and enthusiasm to any world of music.
As an in-demand touring musician and recording artist, she has performed with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, played for sold-out events in theaters doing movie music or world music ensembles, and brought Texas music to packed Jazz and Blues listening rooms in Europe.

“To say the buzz around the band Fog Holler is mysterious is apropos, and ambiguous explanations work fine for banjoist Casey Holmberg, guitarist Tommy Schulz, and bass fiddler Noa Laniakea, but their love of Bluegrass and traditional American music is no mystery. Promoting themselves as “a spectral band that channel the spirits of bluegrass past and future” has brought Fog Holler to the forefront of the San Francisco Bay scene and beyond.” – Bluegrass Standard –

The best Americana songs are those that are subtly familiar, with melody lines and lyrical nods that hint at the deep roots bringing forth strange new flowers. On their new album Come a Reckoning, The Stubborn Lovers demonstrate an intimate familiarity with the craggy contours of country music history, while managing to avoid the pitfalls of nostalgia or revivalism. The band’s evocative lyrics are awash in both spirituality and sensuality, literate without feeling showy. Their music may be anchored in train beats and twang but is never beholden to tradition, as the group melds pop songcraft, E Street swagger, the gutsy bravado of heartland rock, and air-tight vocal harmonies, complementing plenty of big choruses and undeniable hooks.

dKOTA’s new album, Red Shift, was recorded at the venerable Jackpot! Studios in Portland, Oregon, as well as The Map Room and the exclusive Halfling Studios, also in Portland. The album features a handful of local session talent, including the Bizarre Star Strings (Drive-by Truckers, The Decemberists, The Shins, Band of Horses, etc.). The album was meticulously engineered and mixed by Adam Lee (Portugal. The Man, The Decemberists, Built To Spill, etc.), and mastered at Eureka Mastering (STRFKR, Of Montreal, Local Natives, etc.).

Shorty & the Mustangs was formed in Spring of 1996. Big Tex called some of his musician friends to see if they wanted to try something new. Having grown up in Texas (something must have gotten in his blood when he was a youngster), western swing music was calling him home. So they dug out some old Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb records and gave it a shot. Well, 23 years later theyre having so much fun theyre still at it. Other folks are liking it, too. They play the bars and honky tonks regularly around Portland, Oregon, and sometimes play at the local farmers markets and festivals.
Shorty & the Mustangs play a mix of western swing, honky tonk and roots country music. Lara Carlisle’s heart felt singing can get folks out on the dance floor with a Patsy Cline torch song or a Gram Parsons rocker. Ken Woodside and Phil Hornik, on drums and bass, lay down a strong dance beat while Mike Moore on guitar, and Mitch Big Tex Gilbert on steel guitar put in the twang and tears. Marilee Hord sings beautiful duets with Lara and plays the heck out of the fiddle.

Our favorite unreconstituted freak-folk forefather returns to the Laurelthirst!
Singer and songwriter Michael Hurley has became a cult hero for his playfully surreal brand of folk music that’s witty, thoughtful, and filled with both joy and consternation. Married to simple and engaging melodies steeped in traditional folk styles, Hurley often prefers recording at home to going into a studio. Much of his work has a charmingly lo-fi feel, one of the qualities that made him an influential hero and kindred spirit to the later freak folk scene. We’re honored to have him returning to our stage tonight!

Expanding on their love of American R&B, The Resolectrics are a rock & soul power trio exploring the vast landscapes of roots music with layered harmonies, multi-tonal guitar tracks, and ambitious arrangements. Since releasing their “Booker T. meets The Band” debut record, High Water, guitarist Tate Peterson, drummer John Becher, and bassist Bob Dunham have honed a leaner, meaner approach through continuous gigging and constant refinement. The band’s latest record, Open Seas, adds some timeless, British Invasion-style psychedelia to the mix along with a touch of horns and harmonica that help reconnect the music to its soul-based heritage.

Matt Mitchell began writing and performing his music when he was a small child. He was trained classically on piano starting at the age of four and added guitar as a teenager. Matt has taken his foundational skills in music and steadily developed his own sound; a flavor of folk influenced, narrative rich, Americana-roots music. His songs are honest, relatable and moving. You’ll find him playing piano, hammond organ or strumming his very unique 1930’s-era guitar that once belonged to his Great Grandfather. In 2005, after a year living abroad volunteering and traveling Europe, he joined the San Francisco based band Ten Mile Tide and spent the better part of the next six years touring the country as a keyboardist, harmonica player and singer. Matt has played music in every state but Florida. In 2011 he formed his own band; a six piece Americana/rock n’ roll group called ‘Folkinception’. The band was bestowed the honor of “Best Original Band” in 2018 and 2019 in the Pacific NW Inlander’s ‘Best Of’ reader poll. In 2019 they changed their name to ‘Trego’. The band has recorded two, full length albums and is set to release a third in the fall of 2021. In January of 2020 Matt moved into an imported Japanese bus and spent the following 18 months on the road with his wife and two dogs. His newest collection of songs were written amidst his experiences traveling during the tumult and uncertainty of the past few years.
http://www.jeremyjamesmeyer.org
“Last year was a devastating time for fans of Americana, country, and pretty much anyone who loved a well-written song with the passing of Walker, Prine and Billy Joe Shaver all in the span of six months. It’s heartening though to know there is another generation of talented singers and songwriters eschewing current trends and fads and focusing simply on writing timeless, relatable music agnostic of specific genres. Meyer is certainly one of those acolytes to the greats, alongside peers like Todd Snider and Hayes Carll carrying that tradition into the future.” –Glide Magazine

Brad Parsons fell in love with music at a young age as the son of a preacher in Lewiston, ID. After touring for a few years as a sideman playing banjo, keys, and guitar in folk band Horse Feathers, Brad shifted his focus back to his solo band in 2016 and has been blazing trails from Alaska to Atlanta. His booming voice and well-crafted songs led him to appear at festivals like Northwest String Summit, Winter Wondergrass, JamCruise, High Sierra, Aiken Bluegrass Festival, Yarmonygrass and many more. Brad has also shared the stage with his good friends Fruition, Lil Smokies, Trout Steak Revival, John Craigie, etc. In November 2017, he joined forces with Starbird to create a powerful musical experience.

Jacob Miller is an artist that creates with intention and integrity. Preferring lyrical precision over flashy production, Miller’s skillful yet effortless guitar style serves as a modern take on the established yet expansive genre of Singer-Songwriter. With unusual candor and intent, Miller stands apart for his thoughtful musicality and timeless sound.

On Eliza Edens’ sophomore album We’ll Become the Flowers, she seeks to understand what happens after the end. Whether grappling with heartache or a loved one’s mortality, the Brooklyn-based songwriter reimagines endings not as finite events but as devotional experiences that give way to new beginnings. Edens takes inspiration from folk luminaries such as Nick Drake, Karen Dalton and Elizabeth Cotten, sowing her compositions with introspection born from her own grief. What emerges is a glowing collection of songs that serve as a map through tumult, toward hope.

MEGAN DIANA– https://megandiana.bandcamp.com/album/cabin-feverA deep breathe of dulcet, ambient tones and subdued inner anguish, “Cabin Fever” is a compelling immersion full of intimacy and passion. The song highlights Diana’s delicate vocals and finessed French Horn playing alongside seductive keyboard work, raw guitar, and pedal steel; it’s an aural, harmony-rich banquet to behold, ready for listeners to sink into as we let go of the reins and just be for a minute or two.

The Pagan Jug Band is an all-acoustic, boot-stompin’ band featuring a mean banjo and a rockin’ guitar – throw in more strings, some brass, and a washboard and you’ve got a band that really knows how to get folks out of their seats and onto the dance floor! On any given Tuesday in Portland you’ll see them playing their weekly “Pagan Tuesday” show – where the band sometimes swells up to 10 members as long-time fans and random passers-by join them on stage to keep the music communal. The Pagans have a large body of original songs that they mix seamlessly with carefully curated covers and traditionals.

Ryan T Jacobs is the singer/songwriter behind Portland country band Pulp Western and formerly, Portland indie rock mainstay Melville. Having spent seven years living and touring all over Europe, Jacobs speaks four languages, and channels his world travel experiences into his songwriting. His lyrics and dynamic vocals are enhanced by his fiery performance and belief in the songs that he brings to the stage. The Pulp Western sound is inspired by the ever-progressing spirit of country music and combines vintage countrypolitan from Music Row with undercurrents of grit from their disparate outlaw country influences as well.

With what PopMatters describes as “tenacious swagger,” critically-acclaimed solo artist Ashleigh Flynn recently dialed up the volume and debuted an all-female rock band as a nod to the “Rosie the Riveter” archetype from WWII.
Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass music and Motown. A prolific songwriter and performer blessed with unbridled charisma, she arrived on the Americana scene in 2008 with the release of her third LP, American Dream, a poetic lament to the elusiveness of that national ethos. A Million Stars followed in 2013 – a rollicking journey celebrating the women pioneers of the American West.
Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters’ inaugural LP hit the streets in 2018 featuring a sound that hearkens back to early Stones, ‘70s psychedelic country rock, and alternately charms like a Sunday afternoon front porch session…
