Sunbathe is a guitar-pop band from Portland, Oregon, formed in 2015 by songwriter Maggie Morris. Known for her ethereal vocals and introspective songwriting, Morris radiates the smarts and edge of Liz Phair at her anthemic best, but with delicate golden guitar and a glut of catchy harmonies that would make James Mercer shed a little tear. The live band has an exceptional lineup including Adria Ivanitsky, Tyler Figley, and Skyler Hamler. Together, the band has an energetic and joyful presence on stage and a signature sound characterized by shimmering guitars, sweeping melodies, and a deep sense of emotional resonance.

John Calvin Abney rises again from the Oklahoman prairies with his latest album Transparent Towns, available September 19 on his own Tin Canyon Records, via Well Kept Secret / Secretly Distribution. The songs focus on how we remember, and ultimately accept, though he is not always certain the memories we carry adequately mark the moments that make us.
“This record is wrapped around the passage of time, whether or not we can trust the memories that we swear on, how we forgive ourselves and others as seasons turn, and how we define what is important as we roll the boulder back up the hill,” Abney says of Transparent Towns. “We build these routines and live our stories, we rely on our histories and our memories – spoken and recorded. Now, we’re relying on copies of copies, memories of memories, all packed like sardines into our phones, and we’re losing the ability to tell our own stories. I have to constantly remind myself, as well as redefine what matters at the end of a day.”

Last year, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Chris Costalupes made a list of 33 things to do while 33. The lengthy list involved some healthy lifestyle changes, and finally writing some new solo music. Up until that point, Costalupes had been a professional musician touring consistently since he was 20, but it had been years since he focused on his solo career.
Previously, Costalupes established himself in the Pacific Northwest through his associations and contributions to bands such as VHS, Smoker Dad, The Rare Forms, and Family Worship Center. In 2020, Costalupes released his first single, “When I Come Down,” and a year later followed it with the 7-song EP, Exit Material.
Costalupes’s writing exudes an emotional immediacy. Redemption, regret, and self-reflection course through his hard-bitten roots rock, dredging up memories of the Gun Club’s Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Gram Parsons, and The Blasters’s Dave Alvin. This is shit-kicking heartbreak, interwoven with teardrop pedal steel guitars, twanging lead guitars, and folksy acoustic that achieve something of a gritty transcendence. – Lorne Behrman
