Some years back Motor Jeffries, the bands primary song-maker-upper, had a vision to write a collection of songs about the drive through Oregon on Interstate 84. After a few years, some different bands, empty whiskey bottles and a helluvalot of beer, Bad Assets are proud to say we did it. Buckle up and turn it up loud, son.

Matt Mitchell began writing and performing his music when he was a small child. He was trained classically on piano starting at the age of four and added guitar as a teenager. Matt has taken his foundational skills in music and steadily developed his own sound; a flavor of folk influenced, narrative rich, Americana-roots music. His songs are honest, relatable and moving. You’ll find him playing piano, hammond organ or strumming his very unique 1930’s-era guitar that once belonged to his Great Grandfather. In 2005, after a year living abroad volunteering and traveling Europe, he joined the San Francisco based band Ten Mile Tide and spent the better part of the next six years touring the country as a keyboardist, harmonica player and singer. Matt has played music in every state but Florida. In 2011 he formed his own band; a six piece Americana/rock n’ roll group called ‘Folkinception’. The band was bestowed the honor of “Best Original Band” in 2018 and 2019 in the Pacific NW Inlander’s ‘Best Of’ reader poll. In 2019 they changed their name to ‘Trego’. The band has recorded two, full length albums and is set to release a third in the fall of 2021. In January of 2020 Matt moved into an imported Japanese bus and spent the following 18 months on the road with his wife and two dogs. His newest collection of songs were written amidst his experiences traveling during the tumult and uncertainty of the past few years.

Mikey Whalen is an indie songwriter who draws inspiration from the songwriting heavy hitters of decades past. His songs tell stories of lovable misfits and existential woes, sometimes melancholic, sometimes humorous, and often both. He writes and records his songs in his Portland home, which he has affectionately dubbed ‘Pinball Castle’.

Mac Cornish is an americana musician currently based in Oregon. Born and raised at the foot of the Santa Cruz mountains in the San Francisco Bay Area, she grew up among the redwood trees. Cornish was deeply inspired by her natural surroundings and the sounds of her parent’s favorite 60s and 70s bands.

​Her taste has become distinctly her own though, and is reflected within her own music, from folk rock classics like CSNY, the legendary songwriter Townes Van Zandt, and also Tropicália artist Erasmo Carlos. Her songs take on a cosmic country sound that is reminiscent of the sounds of Laurel Canyon and are often simple in nature, but full of emotional texture, revealing her influences from classics like Gram Parsons and Joan Baez.

Steel Fringe is Tyler Johnston (guitar, vox), Nathan Murphy (bass, vox), Parker Hall (drums), Mitch Gonzales (guitar, vox), and Erik Clampitt (pedal steel). Hailing from the rainy enclave of Portland, Oregon, where enchanted forests are carpeted with ferns and moss-covered rocks, the members of Steel Fringe have played together in various bands throughout the years. Steel Fringe features themes that evoke a deep connection to nature, woodland wanderings, hallucinogenic imagery, desert odysseys, and the yearning for life in the country. The songwriting came quickly together, and Steel Fringe was ready to explore the sound with other musicians.

Expanding on their love of American R&B, The Resolectrics are a rock & soul power trio exploring the vast landscapes of roots music with layered harmonies, multi-tonal guitar tracks, and ambitious arrangements. Since releasing their “Booker T. meets The Band” debut record, High Water, guitarist Tate Peterson, drummer John Becher, and bassist Bob Dunham have honed a leaner, meaner approach through continuous gigging and constant refinement. The band’s latest record, Open Seas, adds some timeless, British Invasion-style psychedelia to the mix along with a touch of horns and harmonica that help reconnect the music to its soul-based heritage.

Kris Deelane is making a loud noise in the Portland Rock scene. With her nine piece soul band The Hurt, Kris is amping up her performances in and around Portland and the Pacific Northwest. A true road warrior with years of solid touring experience, Kris is keeping it local and in the moment with shows all over town. From The Alberta Rose Theatre to The Doug Fir, McMenamin’s Edgefield to Al’s Den at the Crystal and a standing residency at Laurelthirst Public House, she and the band are everywhere. Summer 2015, Kris Deelane and The Hurt performed at Oregon Country Fair, What The Festival, and Dixie Festival, and also opened for 3 Dog Night, and Martha Davis and the Motels.

The Hurt is ten players strong and features a number of Portland music luminaries including Ned Failing (Mexican Gun Fight/Floydian Slips) on drums, Steve Kerin on keys (Too Loose Cajun Band, Atomic Gumbo, Rose City Kings and winner of the Cascade Blues Association’s “Keyboardist of the Year”), Greg Hyatt on bass (Five Easy Pieces, Zoo People, Berthaline, and Lapdog, featuring members of Toad The Wet Sprocket), Heidi Shuler (Merl Saunders) on percussion and Alan Toribio (Mexican Gunfight) on guitar. On any given Tuesday in Portland you’ll see them playing their weekly “Pagan Tuesday” show – where the band sometimes swells up to 10 members as long-time fans and random passers-by join them on stage to keep the music communal. The Pagans have a large body of original songs that they mix seamlessly with carefully curated covers and traditionals.

​Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass music and Motown. A prolific songwriter and performer blessed with unbridled charisma, she arrived on the Americana scene in 2008 with the release of her third LP, American Dream, a poetic lament to the elusiveness of that national ethos. A Million Stars followed in 2013 – a rollicking journey celebrating the women pioneers of the American West.
