A Remarkable Story!
In the mid-90’s, friends Brian Jones and Sattie Clark decided to make a tribute album to one of Portland’s finest songwriters who was still very much alive (and still is)—Dan Haley. Many Portland musicians who were part of the vibrant Laurelthirst Public House scene wanted to participate, and over the next year or so, twelve tracks were recorded and mixed at Brian Jones’ makeshift studio in downtown Portland. Before the tracks could be properly mastered and released, however, the tapes and master mixes were lost…and remained so for around 27 years!
About a year ago, Brian Jones stumbled across the final mixes, contacted Sattie, and they decided Better Late Than Never. Brian painstakingly remastered the tracks with modern technologies that made them sound a lot better. Along the way, a few other Portland talents got involved to help. First, Dan Haley, wanting to “pay it forward” after receiving substantial assistance from the JWF in 2022. Gave his blessing to the project and requested that any proceeds go to the Jeremy Wilson Foundation to help local musicians with health expenses. That got Jeremy Wilson involved. Artist/musician Janet Julian (who plays a track on the album) created an original work of art for the album cover. Graphic artist Lydia Carrigan designed and created the CD package and poster.
Now it’s time to party like it’s 1995! Please join us a The Laurelthirst on Saturday, April 1st, 2023 from 9pm to midnight for a release event featuring many of the artists and organizers, and the amazing Dan Haley himself!
