Sequoia is a songwriter living in Portland, Oregon. Primarily raised in rural Vermont, with its nice colored leaves and pretty rivers, New England will always be part of him. Having a spread out family has meant living in several places along the East Coast throughout his childhood. Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles, and took a deeper interest in American Folk, Blues, and Country music. Until recently Sequoia lived in Richmond, Virginia where he’d fallen into a vibrant community of songwriters, and performed frequently for drink tickets and pool table quarters. His music is influenced by a transient life, and exposure to the vast American landscape in an exploration of melancholy, anxiety, and hopefulness.

JCK has to cancel, we are working on seeing what the replacement show or lineup will be!
THE JACKSON COUNTY KILLS are a HONKY TONK & COUNTRY SOUL band from Portland, Oregon that play super-charged American folk music. With the twang of a Hillbilly song and the undeniable beat of the Blues, they perform roadhouse Gospel to comfort the afflicted and celebrate the good times.
“Give us three chords and three minutes and we’ll have you cryin’ in your beer or stompin’ along.” laughs Matty Charles, singer and songwriter for the band. “We’re singing about real life. If I’m not the person in the song I probably know them.”
Charles’ plainspoken narratives use folk and country storytelling to draw the listener in. Lead guitarist, Brian Byrnes deftly improvises with ease while Kevin Major and Tom Armstrong on drums and bass respectively, keep the songs tight and focused. Charles and Byrnes sing and play guitar like brothers who anticipate each other instinctively.
“The Jackson County Kills debut album, HONKY TONK BEAST was awarded “Country Album of the Month” on Bandcamp for May of 2024 and is available on streaming platforms.
MATTY CHARLES & KATIE ROSE are a country-folk duo that craft dreamy songs of heartbreak and wonder with precise vocal harmonies and old time acoustic guitar playing. Their debut album, CATCHING ARROWS is available on streaming platforms.
TOM ARMSTRONG is a life-long musician who has been performing his original honky tonk songs for the better part of two decades. All of this experience is reflected in his self-revealing narratives about the sad side of love, delivered in a smokey baritone and drenched in twang.

“Last year was a devastating time for fans of Americana, country, and pretty much anyone who loved a well-written song with the passing of Walker, Prine and Billy Joe Shaver all in the span of six months. It’s heartening though to know there is another generation of talented singers and songwriters eschewing current trends and fads and focusing simply on writing timeless, relatable music agnostic of specific genres. Meyer is certainly one of those acolytes to the greats, alongside peers like Todd Snider and Hayes Carll carrying that tradition into the future.” –Glide Magazine

Expanding on their love of American R&B, The Resolectrics are a rock & soul power trio exploring the vast landscapes of roots music with layered harmonies, multi-tonal guitar tracks, and ambitious arrangements. Since releasing their “Booker T. meets The Band” debut record, High Water, guitarist Tate Peterson, drummer John Becher, and bassist Bob Dunham have honed a leaner, meaner approach through continuous gigging and constant refinement. The band’s latest record, Open Seas, adds some timeless, British Invasion-style psychedelia to the mix along with a touch of horns and harmonica that help reconnect the music to its soul-based heritage.

Ford released her debut EP, Bobbypin Graveyard, in 2016, followed by her debut full-length, Sugarcane, in 2019. She and Sallie released their first album together, a country album as The Barbaras, in late 2022; Weezy’s partner, Mark Robertson, who records much of her music, mixed and provided backing vocals.
“We definitely grew up listening to a lot of classic country, like Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn and Hank Williams,” she says. “Sallie had this idea of wanting to make country music, and so we had one song that we co-wrote together at first, and then it sort of evolved from there.”
While The Barbaras are country-forward, Ford’s solo work leans more toward the guitar music of the mid-20th century, including ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll, vintage surf music, and the ‘60s French pop subgenre known as yé-yé, after which Ford titled a track on Sugarcane.
One unique quality that brought some early attention to Weezy Ford shows was her tap-dancing skills, which infused both visual and rhythmic interest into her performances. You won’t hear the click of Ford’s heels on In the Movement, but she still seems to dance through these songs. The album is just slightly over half an hour long, and each song barrels into the next.
Ford describes the album’s subject matter as “movement and loss and love songs to friends and mushroom hunting.” “Chanterelle,” which Ford describes as having a “secret agent” feeling, is an ode to the edible fungus of the same name—and to a hobby she’s had since she was a girl.
Lynna is an interdisciplinary artist from the lowcountry of South Carolina currently residing in Portland, Oregon.

Cruise Control is a band of friends from Portland, Oregon who strum up their love for classic country music through a filter of power pop songwriting. (Think wholesome Carter Family harmonies meets The Velvet Underground, or The Louvin Brothers jamming with Dwight Twilley.) On their debut album, “1st”, the vocals weave sweet like threading sugar while acoustic rhythms give way to big-time choruses, blending twangy picking and fuzzy leads.

Honky Tonk Gospel with a Dancefloor Spirit
The Evangeliners are Portland’s most irresistible collision of the sacred and the spirited — a danceable gospel and honky tonk ensemble featuring leading lights from the city’s top Americana acts. Led by Elisabeth Ames of the internationally acclaimed Countrypolitans and Tom Armstrong, a revered traditionalist known for his deep-cut songwriting and old-school country croon, The Evangeliners blend high-lonesome harmonies, shuffling rhythms, and tear-stained twang into a genre-blurring celebration of American roots music.
Formed as a kind of musical revival meeting at the intersection of drinking songs and gospel truths, The Evangeliners channel the emotional weight of Louvin Brothers-style harmonies, the foot-stomping pulse of bluegrass, and the polished edge of classic honky tonk. It’s equal parts church choir and roadside bar, brought to life by a crack team of Portland musicians including Robin Suskind on pedal steel and electric guitar — a veteran of countless country sessions and stages.
Elisabeth Ames, whose work with The Countrypolitans has earned international recognition (including charting singles in Europe and studio collaborations with Lloyd Maines, Rosie Flores, and Dale Watson), brings a soulful vocal presence and original songwriting that evokes both Patsy Cline and Emmylou Harris. Together with Tom Armstrong’s deep knowledge of the genre and timeless delivery, the band performs everything from weeping waltzes and Saturday-night stompers to bluegrass-infused revival tunes and gospel barnburners.
Expect songs you can cry to. Expect songs you can two-step to.
The Evangeliners specialize in what they call “tear-in-your-beer gospel” — songs about heartbreak, redemption, whiskey, and salvation, all delivered with a reverence for tradition and a commitment to getting the dancefloor moving.
Whether they’re playing a roadhouse, a festival, or a Sunday afternoon party in the park, The Evangeliners will raise your spirits, break your heart, and make sure your boots get a workout.

https://www.facebook.com/paganjugband
The Pagan Jug Band is an all-acoustic, boot-stompin’ band featuring a mean banjo and a rockin’ guitar – throw in more strings, some brass, and a washboard and you’ve got a band that really knows how to get folks out of their seats and onto the dance floor! On any given Tuesday in Portland you’ll see them playing their weekly “Pagan Tuesday” show – where the band sometimes swells up to 10 members as long-time fans and random passers-by join them on stage to keep the music communal. The Pagans have a large body of original songs that they mix seamlessly with carefully curated covers and traditionals.

With what PopMatters describes as “tenacious swagger,” critically-acclaimed solo artist Ashleigh Flynn recently dialed up the volume and debuted an all-female rock band as a nod to the “Rosie the Riveter” archetype from WWII.
Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass music and Motown. A prolific songwriter and performer blessed with unbridled charisma, she arrived on the Americana scene in 2008 with the release of her third LP, American Dream, a poetic lament to the elusiveness of that national ethos. A Million Stars followed in 2013 – a rollicking journey celebrating the women pioneers of the American West.
Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters’ inaugural LP hit the streets in 2018 featuring a sound that hearkens back to early Stones, ‘70s psychedelic country rock, and alternately charms like a Sunday afternoon front porch session…

Josh Cole has been playing bluegrass in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years. It started in the late 90s, when he first heard “Midnight Moonlight” from Old and In the Way. That moment forever bonded Josh to bluegrass music.
He went on to serve as President of the Oregon Bluegrass Association and continues to host “Music From the True Vine” on KBOO-FM, the longest running bluegrass show West of the Mississippi.
Josh’s influences include Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, and Bill Monroe, many of whom are featured on the Josh Cole Bluegrass Show, his podcast with nearly 200 episodes of traditional bluegrass recordings.
Josh has played in dozens of bands, along with running his own hard-driving bluegrass band for nearly two decades. That’s why hometown fans have lovingly nicknamed him “The Elvis of Portland Bluegrass.”

SHIFTED TO 3rd SATURDAY THIS MONTH!
http://krisdeelaneandthehurt.com
Kris Deelane is making a loud noise in the Portland Rock scene. With her nine piece soul band The Hurt, Kris is amping up her performances in and around Portland and the Pacific Northwest. A true road warrior with years of solid touring experience, Kris is keeping it local and in the moment with shows all over town. From The Alberta Rose Theatre to The Doug Fir, McMenamin’s Edgefield to Al’s Den at the Crystal and a standing residency at Laurelthirst Public House, she and the band are everywhere. Summer 2015, Kris Deelane and The Hurt performed at Oregon Country Fair, What The Festival, and Dixie Festival, and also opened for 3 Dog Night, and Martha Davis and the Motels.
The Hurt is ten players strong and features a number of Portland music luminaries including Ned Failing (Mexican Gun Fight/Floydian Slips) on drums, Steve Kerin on keys (Too Loose Cajun Band, Atomic Gumbo, Rose City Kings and winner of the Cascade Blues Association’s “Keyboardist of the Year”), Greg Hyatt on bass (Five Easy Pieces, Zoo People, Berthaline, and Lapdog, featuring members of Toad The Wet Sprocket), Heidi Shuler (Merl Saunders) on percussion and Alan Toribio (Mexican Gunfight) on guitar. With her backing singers, The Lady Parts, and horn section, Kris is dipping into deep cuts and old school favorites from the soul sounds of the 60’s and 70’s. Think Motown to Memphis, Stax to Atlantic records, Aretha to Etta. It’s all here!

LIMITED ADVANCE TICKETS through TICKET TOMATO:
https://www.tickettomato.com/event/9614
Bob Sumner believes that music is made to evolve. On latest work, Some Place to Rest Easy, you’ll hear countrypolitan strings alongside ambient sensibilities; tasteful synth tracks followed seamlessly by numbers with dobro and steel guitar. It’s an album that takes as much inspiration from the audio production of Randy Travis as it does the lyrical soul of Big Thief’s Adrienne Lenker—a melding of eras, sounds, concepts, and stylings that’s informed by the past, but never bound by it.
Songs like “Don’t We Though” explore how the same relationship can be both loving and tumultuous, with smooth instrumentals that underlay a more complicated lyrical landscape. “Forty Years on the Floor” and “Lonesome Sound” make ripe soundtracks for country drives. And three songs on the album—”Bridges,” “Motel Room,” and “Is It Really Any Wonder”—touch on the loss of multiple loved ones to alcoholism.
More than a single sound, influence, instrumental, or theme, the through line in Sumner’s music has always been vulnerability. “I always want people to feel something,” Sumner explains. “If I heard that this album helped somebody that was feeling down, even just by feeling some other emotion for a little while, that’s the number one thing for me.”

Quattlebaum, Southern Gent and Banjo Slinger, brings more to the table than just music. With his infectious smile and weird antics, he brings people together; encouraging camaraderie and building community. The singer-songwriter, currently based in Bend, Oregon, tours the country picking and strumming indie-folk songs that are spacious and emotive, and have an implicit groove. When he plays, you can hear the reverberations of the rustic mountains clashing with the breezy ocean. Like a willowy heron, Quattlebaum struts around on stage as the music moves through him, evoking a range of emotions from laughter to longing. He shares tender moments, where one can almost hear his banjo breathing, then erupts into raucous peaks of unbridled energy—his captivating solo performances take his audiences on a ride.
dadweed is an acoustic trio based out of Portland, OR. Reimagining pickin’ and thumpin’ by blending elements of jazz/folk/pop/R&B within a traditional bluegrass lens, their sets explore a wide variety of styles and dynamics – with a focus on improvisation – showcasing both covers and originals.
