Portland you sultry spring armpit. You beautiful algal bloom. Every Tuesday in March I just wanna hear about how you fell off three bikes welded together right into the arms of a radical lime haired goat herder who took you to a fermenter’s warehouse to lay beneath the sweating vinegar vats and touch tongue rings in time to a recording of Canadian geese doing slam poetry. I’ll be @laurelthirstpub from 9-11. Every week. Tuesdays. Like clockwork. With new songs and old songs and good friends who blow my musical mind. Come join us. We love you. It’s a $10 donation…

A passionate violinist and vocalist, Michelle Alany has delighted and wowed audiences worldwide.
Specializing in a global acoustic sound that features lush strings, soulful vocals and rhythmic groove, Michelle delivers soulful interpretations of traditional and original Sephardic (Judeo-Spanish), Balkan and Israeli songs infused with her tasty Austin-blues stylings.
She is at home delivering haunting Mediterranean melodies, trading shredder blues licks or gently crafting a sensuous country solo on the fly, bringing her joyous abandon and enthusiasm to any world of music.
As an in-demand touring musician and recording artist, she has performed with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, played for sold-out events in theaters doing movie music or world music ensembles, and brought Texas music to packed Jazz and Blues listening rooms in Europe.

Tom also plays bass with The Jackson County Kills, and is a regular co-host of the Noontime Jamboree classic country music program on KBOO in Portland.
The Oregon Trailers approach classic 60/70’s Country with a modern sensibility. Equal parts “Outlaw”, “Bakersfield” and “Truck-Driving music” there is a deep appreciation and respect for the genres. After all, this is the vinyl our parents spun- the stuff we listened to and learned from growing up. Waylon, Buck, Merle…it’s dancin’ music for longneck drinkers.

Family Mystic is more than just a band; they are a transformative experience that redefines healing through song, dance, and emotional connection. Based out of Portland, OR, this collective of four visionary songwriters blends elements of classic funk/soul, 60’s/70’s psychedelia, a splash of progressive jazz fusion, with angelic four-part vocal harmonies, innovating a genre-defying experience that calls listeners into the heart of being human through the sanctity and celebration of music.
Marcelo’s distinctive guitar riffs create a container of solace and joy, paired with Ian Love’s ethereal falsetto that stirs a deep well of emotions. The rhythmic foundation is anchored by brothers Matthew and Tommy Serino, whose life-long bond energizes every performance. The result of these brothers thoughtfully expressing their craft with aligned intentions, invites listeners to feel belonging in the music itself.

Cruise Control is a band of friends from Portland, Oregon who strum up their love for classic country music through a filter of power pop songwriting. (Think wholesome Carter Family harmonies meets The Velvet Underground, or The Louvin Brothers jamming with Dwight Twilley.) On their debut album, “1st”, the vocals weave sweet like threading sugar while acoustic rhythms give way to big-time choruses, blending twangy picking and fuzzy leads.
https://smilepile.bandcamp.com
smilepile is a Portland-based folk outfit whose music would fit nicely in a jukebox alongside the likes of Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. Zachary’s plain-spoken vocal and get-stuck-in-your-head melodies will have you singing and dancing along in no time.

Born and raised in the state of Oregon, Lee Walker is a drummer with a penchant for songcraft. In recent years they have enjoyed discovering a voice within the storied tradition of country western music.

Originally the Barbecue Orchestra, it was started by famed washtub bass and jug blower Fritz Richmond (of the original Jim Kweskin Jug Band) and Turtle VanDemarr (guitar player with Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks). In 2008 Fritz passed on to jug band heaven and Turtle began playing music in his daughter’s band. The remaining members Stew, Spud and Doc added a sousaphone player par excellence, Mark.

Expanding on their love of American R&B, The Resolectrics are a rock & soul power trio exploring the vast landscapes of roots music with layered harmonies, multi-tonal guitar tracks, and ambitious arrangements. Since releasing their “Booker T. meets The Band” debut record, High Water, guitarist Tate Peterson, drummer John Becher, and bassist Bob Dunham have honed a leaner, meaner approach through continuous gigging and constant refinement. The band’s latest record, Open Seas, adds some timeless, British Invasion-style psychedelia to the mix along with a touch of horns and harmonica that help reconnect the music to its soul-based heritage.

Thunder Ridge is a straight-ahead bluegrass band from Portland, OR. The traditional five-piece band is made up of banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass and fiddle. They will steal your heart with hard driving vocal harmonies and instrumentals. Allow them to take you down a path of yesteryear with a good old fashioned sound inspired by the masters of bluegrass, and sprinkled with a few originals!
https://www.thecountyfools.com
If you were to bump into a member of the County Fools in the real world – walking the streets of Portland, kicked back on a barstool, or wandering in a hayfield – you might think to yourself “Hey, these are some good timin’ guys. There’s not a serious thing about these fellas. They’re just foolin’ around!” But friend, you’d soon come to realize that there is one thing that The Fools take very seriously: the great tradition of Bluegrass music.
The County Fools’ sound and sensibility is deeply rooted in that rich American dirt first tilled by the founders – folks like the Stanley Brothers, Flatt and Scruggs, and Bill Monroe – and further shaped by the great second generation of bluegrass musicians. Continuing this tradition with reverence and creativity, and playing this music as it’s meant to be played, is the spirit that guides the County Fools each time they step up to the mic.

As a native of Iowa, Alex Began writing music at the age of 15. He’s navigated his way through many avenues trying to find the most honest and authentic version of his sound. Once he truly found it, he’s had the opportunity to share stages with the likes of Kenny Loggins, Nathaniel Rateliff and a plethora of other industry greats. After inking a publishing deal in 2022, Alex greatly expanded his writing proficiencies and repertoire. Not only does he write for himself, he’s been trusted to be the voice for many other singers spanning many other genres. Drawing inspiration from folk, Americana and even country, Alex’s unique sound will make you lean in and want more. Writing love songs when he’s been heartbroken; singing about hope and passion when his has been lost; Finishing a song when the relationship behind it has ended…nothing can stop this man from delivering the sermon of song.

DREAM COUNTRY DISCO.
What does this mean? Take your favorite vintage keyboard — hello Wurlitzer, hello Fender Rhodes — put them through an echo/delay pedal, add lush, dreamy layers of French horn and vocals, anchor them with throwback drum grooves, and top it all off with space echoed pedal steel guitar (thank you Raymond Richards). After the release of her debut album Women in My Head, Megan has been hard at work touring the world and working on her second album Cabin Fever, produced by Richards, to be released in October 2023.

Kris Deelane is making a loud noise in the Portland Rock scene. With her nine piece soul band The Hurt, Kris is amping up her performances in and around Portland and the Pacific Northwest. A true road warrior with years of solid touring experience, Kris is keeping it local and in the moment with shows all over town. From The Alberta Rose Theatre to The Doug Fir, McMenamin’s Edgefield to Al’s Den at the Crystal and a standing residency at Laurelthirst Public House, she and the band are everywhere. Summer 2015, Kris Deelane and The Hurt performed at Oregon Country Fair, What The Festival, and Dixie Festival, and also opened for 3 Dog Night, and Martha Davis and the Motels.
The Hurt is ten players strong and features a number of Portland music luminaries including Ned Failing (Mexican Gun Fight/Floydian Slips) on drums, Steve Kerin on keys (Too Loose Cajun Band, Atomic Gumbo, Rose City Kings and winner of the Cascade Blues Association’s “Keyboardist of the Year”), Greg Hyatt on bass (Five Easy Pieces, Zoo People, Berthaline, and Lapdog, featuring members of Toad The Wet Sprocket), Heidi Shuler (Merl Saunders) on percussion and Alan Toribio (Mexican Gunfight) on guitar. With her backing singers, The Lady Parts, and horn section, Kris is dipping into deep cuts and old school favorites from the soul sounds of the 60’s and 70’s. Think Motown to Memphis, Stax to Atlantic records, Aretha to Etta. It’s all here!

The Pagan Jug Band is an all-acoustic, boot-stompin’ band featuring a mean banjo and a rockin’ guitar – throw in more strings, some brass, and a washboard and you’ve got a band that really knows how to get folks out of their seats and onto the dance floor! On any given Tuesday in Portland you’ll see them playing their weekly “Pagan Tuesday” show – where the band sometimes swells up to 10 members as long-time fans and random passers-by join them on stage to keep the music communal. The Pagans have a large body of original songs that they mix seamlessly with carefully curated covers and traditionals.

With what PopMatters describes as “tenacious swagger,” critically-acclaimed solo artist Ashleigh Flynn recently dialed up the volume and debuted an all-female rock band as a nod to the “Rosie the Riveter” archetype from WWII.
Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass music and Motown. A prolific songwriter and performer blessed with unbridled charisma, she arrived on the Americana scene in 2008 with the release of her third LP, American Dream, a poetic lament to the elusiveness of that national ethos. A Million Stars followed in 2013 – a rollicking journey celebrating the women pioneers of the American West.
Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters’ inaugural LP hit the streets in 2018 featuring a sound that hearkens back to early Stones, ‘70s psychedelic country rock, and alternately charms like a Sunday afternoon front porch session…

PREWAR JASS AND HOKUM! ALBUM RELEASE TONIGHT!
Stone & Sue’s Forty Drop Few are a trio that play pre-war stringband, hillbilly, country blues and jazz tunes as well as originals. The trio consists of Candra Edwards, Ethan Francis and Elliot Kennedy, all on a variety of different instruments.
https://www.instagram.com/stoneandsue/
Stone & Sue’s Forty Drop Few is a collaboration between Candra and Ethan Francis—who are partners in both music and life—and fiddler Elliot Kennedy. The band’s freshman record is a DIY effort of 14 songs from 1924 to 1936, along with two sneaky originals written and recorded with such faithful fluency to the time period that their modernity is indiscernible.
https://sinnerfriends.com/about
Conner Steven Vlietstra is an Oldtime Country musician from Chattanooga, Tennessee with a family from the Mississippi Delta. He began playing Country Blues music on the guitar at the age of 14 and began playing Country music shortly after with the inheritance of his grandfather’s (Papa’s) banjo.
Conner’s progression as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist is fueled by the influence of artists such as Furry Lewis, Uncle Dave Macon, and the Louvin Brothers.

Shorty & the Mustangs was formed in Spring of 1996. Big Tex called some of his musician friends to see if they wanted to try something new. Having grown up in Texas (something must have gotten in his blood when he was a youngster), western swing music was calling him home. So they dug out some old Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb records and gave it a shot. Well, 29 years later they’re having so much fun they’re still at it. Other folks are liking it, too. They play the bars and honky tonks regularly around Portland, Oregon, and sometimes play at the local farmers markets and festivals.
Shorty & the Mustangs play a mix of western swing, honky tonk and roots country music. Lara Carlisle’s heart felt singing can get folks out on the dance floor with a Patsy Cline torch song or a Gram Parsons rocker. Ken Woodside and Phil Hornik, on drums and bass, lay down a strong dance beat while Mike Moore on guitar, and Mitch “Big Tex” Gilbert on steel guitar put in the twang and tears. Marilee Hord sings beautiful duets with Lara and plays the heck out of the fiddle.

TONIGHT Snock brings in some of his pals to rockandroll for a few sets!
Our favorite unreconstituted folk-rock forefather returns to the Laurelthirst!
Singer and songwriter Michael Hurley has became a cult hero for his playfully surreal brand of folk music that’s witty, thoughtful, and filled with both joy and consternation. Married to simple and engaging melodies steeped in traditional folk styles, Hurley often prefers recording at home to going into a studio. Much of his work has a charmingly lo-fi feel, one of the qualities that made him an influential hero and kindred spirit to the later freak folk scene. We’re honored to have him returning to our stage tonight!
These shows have become a little chaotic, we’re going to try charging a cover and see how that affects the overall feel of the show.
