With what PopMatters describes as “tenacious swagger,” critically-acclaimed solo artist Ashleigh Flynn recently dialed up the volume and debuted an all-female rock band as a nod to the “Rosie the Riveter” archetype from WWII.
Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass music and Motown. A prolific songwriter and performer blessed with unbridled charisma, she arrived on the Americana scene in 2008 with the release of her third LP, American Dream, a poetic lament to the elusiveness of that national ethos. A Million Stars followed in 2013 – a rollicking journey celebrating the women pioneers of the American West.
Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters’ inaugural LP hit the streets in 2018 featuring a sound that hearkens back to early Stones, ‘70s psychedelic country rock, and alternately charms like a Sunday afternoon front porch session…

AFTER A TERRIBLE HEALTH INCIDENT, JOSH IS BACK!
https://www.joshcolemusic.com
Josh Cole has been playing bluegrass in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years. It started in the late 90s, when he first heard “Midnight Moonlight” from Old and In the Way. That moment forever bonded Josh to bluegrass music.
He went on to serve as President of the Oregon Bluegrass Association and continues to host “Music From the True Vine” on KBOO-FM, the longest running bluegrass show West of the Mississippi.
Josh’s influences include Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, and Bill Monroe, many of whom are featured on the Josh Cole Bluegrass Show, his podcast with nearly 200 episodes of traditional bluegrass recordings.
Josh has played in dozens of bands, along with running his own hard-driving bluegrass band for nearly two decades. That’s why hometown fans have lovingly nicknamed him “The Elvis of Portland Bluegrass.”

Kris Deelane is making a loud noise in the Portland Rock scene. With her nine piece soul band The Hurt, Kris is amping up her performances in and around Portland and the Pacific Northwest. A true road warrior with years of solid touring experience, Kris is keeping it local and in the moment with shows all over town. From The Alberta Rose Theatre to The Doug Fir, McMenamin’s Edgefield to Al’s Den at the Crystal and a standing residency at Laurelthirst Public House, she and the band are everywhere. Summer 2015, Kris Deelane and The Hurt performed at Oregon Country Fair, What The Festival, and Dixie Festival, and also opened for 3 Dog Night, and Martha Davis and the Motels.
The Hurt is ten players strong and features a number of Portland music luminaries including Ned Failing (Mexican Gun Fight/Floydian Slips) on drums, Steve Kerin on keys (Too Loose Cajun Band, Atomic Gumbo, Rose City Kings and winner of the Cascade Blues Association’s “Keyboardist of the Year”), Greg Hyatt on bass (Five Easy Pieces, Zoo People, Berthaline, and Lapdog, featuring members of Toad The Wet Sprocket), Heidi Shuler (Merl Saunders) on percussion and Alan Toribio (Mexican Gunfight) on guitar. With her backing singers, The Lady Parts, and horn section, Kris is dipping into deep cuts and old school favorites from the soul sounds of the 60’s and 70’s. Think Motown to Memphis, Stax to Atlantic records, Aretha to Etta. It’s all here!

JT is influenced by all the great guitarists and has a stylized sound whether on the acoustic or electric guitars. He is joined by bassist wife Maggie. Ken Woodside often joins them on drums. Follow their journey filled with characters, funny tales, and stories of a life well traveled. Topped with plenty of musical twists and turns, jams and vocal harmonies.

The “Forty Drop Few” are a trio originally from the southwest that play popular music of the early 1900s. They perform in various styles from the era as a string band and are influenced by nothing other than the old 78 records that they love so well. Their main influences include New Orleans jazz, southwestern fiddle music, classic banjo rags, black string band music, hillbilly harmonies and unique vocals. The trio consists of Ethan and Candra Francis and Elliot Kennedy who all currently reside in Portland Oregon. The couple, also known as “Stone and Sue” have been playing music together for close to a decade and met Kennedy who joined them 4 years ago. The three are inseparable and spend all of their time picking apart old tunes, listening to 78s, throwing shows in Portland and traveling around the country together.

About a year ago, Phoenix-born neotraditional country singer-songwriter Taylor Glasheen released her brand-new single, “When She Drinks” in honour of Pride Month. The single was an early clue to the direction of her upcoming sophomore album, which will be out later this year.
Kyla Pearson: For those who are unfamiliar with you and your music, can you share with us how you got your start? What inclined you to pursue country music, and the neo-traditional route specifically?
Taylor Glasheen: I’ve been surrounded by music from a very young age. It was very common to find me sitting on my dad’s knee as a kid strumming the guitar strings while he held down chords, and singing along to our favorite tune. I’ve always loved the stories that are painted through country music and feel it brings a great community to the people.

KRISTEN GRAINGER & TRUE NORTH is a bluegrass-leaning Americana powerhouse of terrific songwriting, lush vocals and crazy-good instrumentalists.
Fronted by singer-songwriter Kristen Grainger, the band is comprised of multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Dan Wetzel and Pacific Northwest bluegrass superstars Martin Stevens (mandolin, octave mandolin, fiddle, vocals) and Josh Adkins (upright bass, vocals), both formerly of the Bluegrass Regulators.
Kristen is making a name for herself as a crafter of great songs, taking first place in the 2020 USA Songwriting Competition (folk), and landing a 2022 songwriter showcase at SXSW. She was named, along with Brandi Carlile and Dolly Parton, one of the “Women Who Wrote Our 2020 Soundtrack” by The Bluegrass Situation.
“True North plays tunes so smooth they bring to mind bluegrass-pop artists like Alison Krauss and Union Station, as well as old country legends like Hank Williams.”
The Rosa Lees hail from the hills of sunny Southern Oregon and trace a distinct line between their music and the vision of female bluegrass pioneers such as Hazel Dickens, Alice Gerrard, Rose Maddox, and beyond.
At the forefront of their music lies an emphasis on closely blended harmonies, hard-charging rhythms, and lyrically potent songs. Their repertoire mingles elements of traditional bluegrass with traces of old-time fiddle and banjo tunes, classic country, old-world Celtic music, and gospel. They prioritize songs with meaning and a strong turn of phrase, working to fuse all these ingredients into the original songs that punctuate their sets.
Audiences consistently rave about the distinct blend of their vocal harmonies and instrumental acuity, not to mention their playful on-stage demeanor. The Rosa Lees are Rachel Buklad on banjo, Jessie Monter on fiddle, Holly Hurley on bass, and Bekkah McAlvage on guitar.

There has been a cult-like fascination growing around Kassi Valazza since the self-release of her 2019 debut album Dear Dead Days, which she followed with a surprise digital EP called Highway Sounds last year. She is seated squarely at the vanguard of new American songwriters strengthening and broadening the sound of country music as she tours with celebrated acts such as Melissa Carper and Riddy Arman. The Southwestern native resides in Portland, Oregon, a hotbed of songwriters producing albums that both bear the torch and bend the arc of American roots music, and she recently signed with Fluff & Gravy Records, a label known for launching Anna Tivel and Margo Cilker.

As a veteran of 50 years in the music business, life is good for Oregon Music Hall of Fame inductee Gary Ogan.
From his first major label release on Elektra Records in 1972, to his move to Los Angeles in 1977 to sign with Leon Russell’s Paradise Records, Ogan learned the ropes and went on to blaze his own unique trail, touring the U.S. and Europe, writing and recording hundreds of songs, and making lifelong friends along the way.
The mid-90’s saw Ogan moving to Nashville where he signed as staff songwriter with Sony/ATV Tree, who published over 60 of his songs. Since then, in addition to continuing to write, record, and perform his own music, Gary had a four year stint drumming in The Darrell Scott Band, another two years producing Danny O’Keefe‘s “Looking Glass and the Dreamers”, and the last seven years has found him subbing on keys in the popular Portland based Motown tribute band, Kris Deelane And The Hurt.
Ogan’s newest passion was sparked by a curiosity in his own Cherokee DNA, and has opened many doors as a result, like providing opportunities to create and produce new music for author & activists, Winona LaDuke (Ojibwe), and the late John Trudell (Santee Sioux). Ogan has also become bandleader to The Flying Eagle Band, a Portland based tribute band to the late Kaw/Creek sax legend, Jim Pepper, as well as COB to The Jim Pepper Native Arts Council.

SPECIAL “2nd SATURDAY” EDITION
Expanding on their love of American R&B, The Resolectrics are a rock & soul power trio exploring the vast landscapes of roots music with layered harmonies, multi-tonal guitar tracks, and ambitious arrangements. Since releasing their “Booker T. meets The Band” debut record, High Water, guitarist Tate Peterson, drummer John Becher, and bassist Bob Dunham have honed a leaner, meaner approach through continuous gigging and constant refinement. The band’s latest record, Open Seas, adds some timeless, British Invasion-style psychedelia to the mix along with a touch of horns and harmonica that help reconnect the music to its soul-based heritage.

The music is as sophisticated as it is simple. It is folk, it is rock, it is roots, it is dirt. It really is just is music for humans, from humans. People tend to think of us as Americana, but if Pink Floyd, Neil Young, and Elvis Costello had a big, two-hearted baby, this would be it. It is storytelling through songwriting that hearkens to Randy Newman, Bill Callahan, Tom Waits. The precision lyrics, singing keyboards, wailing harmonica, tight rhythms and haunting lead guitar tell universal stories of heartbreak and hope and hurt and, running through it all, a love deep and true.
