A night of beloved local drummer Ned Folkerth’s friends celebrating him in a musical style in honor of his 60th birthday!

Loose jams, no cover, fun times… come see what’s brewing!

This afternoon will be a low-key, impromptu celebration of the life, music, and art of Janet Julian. Our beloved soul compass departed this world gracefully in the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 6th. She will forever be in our hearts and terribly missed.

Janet Julian’s musical friends and co-conspiritors will be playing numbers from the Petty Cash song (the few they actually know the lyrics to) and then stuff they like and know how to do.

Dan Haley (mandolin/guitar), Francis Regan (banjo), Alicia Lewis (vocals), Ben Sandler (bass), Annette Lowman (vocals), Rachel Blumberg (drums), and Kate O’Brien (fiddle) will all be on hand. Quite possibly others.

It’s sad to lose a friend, but good to gather and celebrate their energies and contributions to our lives over the years. We look forward to seeing you.

Like a late summer bloom casting shadows in the sunlight, Alexis Mahler’s singular voice creates moments that are precious and delicate; heart-breaking and soul warming.

Michigan-made, and classically trained, Mahler has made a musical home for herself in Portland, Oregon. Quieting rooms with her intimate blend of classical, jazz, and folk – she has endeared herself to audiences across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Her music contains thoughtful, elegant strings layered with memorable, and sweetly delivered vocal melodies. In her own words: “Music should be connective, accessible, expressive, expansive, often imperfect, healing – a release”.

Between teaching private music lessons and performing, Mahler can be found doing session work for songwriters, both local and long-distance. Over the years she has collaborated with Matt Costa, Sleater-Kinney, Mayer Hawthorne, Jacob Miller, Shook Twins, Cyrus Nabipoor, Integer, Whitney, Erisy Watt, Hanna Haas, and many others.

Josh Cole has been playing bluegrass in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years. It started in the late 90s, when he first heard “Midnight Moonlight” from Old and In the Way. That moment forever bonded Josh to bluegrass music.

He went on to serve as President of the Oregon Bluegrass Association and continues to host “Music From the True Vine” on KBOO-FM, the longest running bluegrass show West of the Mississippi. 

Josh’s influences include Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, and Bill Monroe, many of whom are featured on the Josh Cole Bluegrass Show, his podcast with nearly 200 episodes of traditional bluegrass recordings. 

Josh has played in dozens of bands, along with running his own hard-driving bluegrass band for nearly two decades. That’s why hometown fans have lovingly nicknamed him “The Elvis of Portland Bluegrass.”

A long-time favorite in Seattle, Massey’s newest project gained national attention after an In Studio performance on KEXP and broad airplay for their debut LP Get Well Soon on college radio. In 2024 Warren Dunes performed at notable festivals around the PNW including Treefort Music Fest, Capitol Hill Block Party, and Bumbershoot Music Festival, and their most recent release Aquamarine was voted one of KEXP’s listeners top 50 albums of 2024.

Kris Stuart (Wanderlodge, PDX Family Band, Willy Tea Taylor) brings his own powerful, guitar-driven roots-rock band in for an evening’s entertainment!

Rose and I have been together for over 15 years, but we’ve known each other for more than 50. Often she has accompanied me on bass guitar. My past includes The Goodman Brothers, my nom de plume Buzz Holland, Mesa/Boogie, Nashville, Shanghai, Miami Beach, Heidelberg. and other places. My brother Billy and I (who lives and plays in Berlin) made music and records together for many years as The Goodman Brothers, which frequently included the talents of celebrated guitarist Steve Kimock.

My latest record is Ranchero Radio, produced by Dan Eccles. You can stream or purchase it here in various forms. Also of recent note is the CD Broken River, wherein our friend Donna Jean Godchaux MacKay invited us to Muscle Shoals to cut some sides with her favorite players. 

Vocalist Alli Lurie (Bundy Band, Woodland Empire, Cross-Eyed Rosie) brings an allstar band to the Laurelthirst for an evening of roots-rock goodness!

Alli and the Y’all Stars bring an evening of bluesy, sassy, soulful, deep music that encompasses Alli’s history as a singer- from gospel to psychedelic rock, Prohibition Blues to Country and R&B. Noelle & The Deserters bring South-Western honky tonk from the high deserts of New Mexico to the golden hills of California. Fronted by singer-songwriter Noelle Fiore, their music draws inspiration from the likes of Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, Marty Robbins, J.J Cale, Gene Clark, Townes Van Zandt, and the great outlaw country players. The Deserters include seasoned players Graham Norwood (Bryan Scary)(Graham Norwood solo) (guitar), Alicia Vanden Heuvel (The Aislers Set)(bass), David Cuetter (Tarnation)(pedal steel), and Jerry Fiore (Sonic Love Affair)(drums), all based in the Bay Area and Sacramento. Noelle was raised in Taos, New Mexico. As a guitar player and vocalist, she was a founding member of Sweet Chariot, singing and playing guitar/ banjo. Later, she and Tim Cohen (The Fresh & Onlys) founded the band Magic Trick, recording four full length albums for labels Hardly Art and Captured Tracks. Noelle is also a current member of the Shannon Shaw Band, on guitar and vocals.

High Desert Daydream is Noelle & The Deserters debut album, out May 31, 2024 on Speakeasy Studios SF. The songs on the album, written by Noelle, touch on life in the west, growing up in Taos, living in California, songs of love, memory, marriage, work, good times, and bad times. Like all classic country music, the songs are infused with a sense of real-life struggles and living life in the everyday.  Noelle’s incredible voice carries the album, and her songs are at once moving, powerful, tender, humorous, and intimately relatable.

Before joining forces, the duo behind Sgt. Splendor were already formidable solo artists, Kate Vargas chalking up acclaim at outlets like NPR, HuffPost, SPIN, No Depression Rolling Stone and Vice (including praise from the “Dean of American Rock Critics” Robert Christgau);

and Eric McFadden amassing an impressive resume including stints on guitar with George Clinton & the P-Funk All Stars, Anders Osbourne, Fishbone’s Angelo Moore, and Eric Burdon & The Animals, plus a slew of solo albums, and session work and gigs with everyone from Jackson Browne to The Clash’s Joe Strummer.

Sgt Splendor’s 2nd release, “Death of the Hoochie Koo” dropped May 19th on Buena Vista West Records.

“Tom Waits’ music has always been a point of connection for me & Kate. While our musical approaches differ, they’re also kindred and share a lot of common elements. Our Southwestern upbringing comes through—that sort of mysteriouso desert thing—but also a carnivalesque Waits-ian vibe. The new record is a bit more cohesive but still eclectic. Kind of an Alt-Funk, Desert Roots, Dirty Blues, Rock thing. Our styles have always been complementary.” Vargas concurs: “Sgt. Splendor really feels like a combination of both of us—equally.”
